The total expenditure out of Public Works Fund for the year 1885-86 was £1 475 386 but from this, in order to ascertain the amount of works carried out under the direct supervision of the Public Works staff as distinct from works carried out by the officers of other departments, there has to be excluded the amounts paid for district railways, and the expenditure on immigration (departmental), portion of additions to opened railways, portion of roads, portion of waterworks on goldfields, total purchase of Native lands, total telegraph extension, portion of public buildings, portion of lighthouses, harbour works and harbour defences, total charges and expenses of raising loans, and total contingent defence, also salaries charged to and included 111 cost of various works, and having excluded these items, and added cost of works under Consolidated Fund, the amount which remains as representing the cost of works carried out under the supervision of the Public Works Department proper is . • ■ • • - • • • •• • • • • ' Eatio of Cost of Supervision to Cost of Works (£913,555). : Although works to the extent of £561,831 have thus been excluded from, the total expenditure m order to arrive at the cost o works executed under the direct supervision of the Public Works Department proper, it should be borne in mind that, while the department does not directly supervise the works so excluded, there is, nevertheless ac^siSrablamount of engineering and administrative work thrown upon the department in connecSon witl them and if itwere possible to state exactly what the cost of this engineering and administration amounts to inTgures,a^d to exclude it accordingly, the ratio of cost of supervision to actual expenditure would be considerably less than as stated above.
