The cost of the Waimea Plains Eailway has been ascertained and £ s. d. £ s. d. fixedat ... ... ... ... ... ... 108,7130 0 The interest to which the company are entitled is 7 per cent, on the cost of the railway, per annum ... ... ... 7,609 18 2 But as the company made a net profit during the year ended March, 1883, of ... ... ... ... 964 14 5 The deficiency in guaranteed interest for that year was only ... 6,645 3 9 This deficiency was provided for as follows, viz. : —« Government paid two-sevenths of deficiency ... ... 1,898 12 6 Eatepayers to pay five-sevenths deficiency ... ... 4,746 11 3 6,645 3 9 The company received an authority (vide copy attached) authorizing them to levy rates for the amount to be paid by the ratepayers, as above ... ... ... ... ... ... 4,746 11 3 The rateable rental value of the railway district being ... 28,469 5 9 The company levied a rate of 3s. 4d. in the pound on this rateable value, and the rate thus made will produce ... ... ... 4,744 17 6 Wheebas, by a written instrument under seal, dated the 18th day of October, 1883, the Waimea Plains Eailway Company (Limited) (hereinafter called "the company)," pursuant to the provisions of the 9th section of "The District Eailways Act Amendment Act, 1883," made application for guaranteed interest for the year ending the 31st day of March, 1883, and for power to raise, by means of a rate, a part of such guaranteed interest, payable upon the examination of accounts and books for such year: And whereas the part of the guaranteed interest it is so desired to raise by means of a rate as aforesaid amounts to four thousand seven hundred and forty-six pounds eleven shillings and threepence : Now, therefore, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority Vested in me by the 9th section of the said Act, I, Edwin Mitchelson, the Minister for Public Works, having caused the accounts and books of the company for the year ending the 31st day of March, 1883, to be examined, and being satisfied that the company is entitled to raise such rate under "The District Eailways Act, 1877," and the amendments thereof, for the purposes in " The District Eailways Acts Amendment Act, 1883," particularly mentioned, do hereby direct that such rate as is ' requisite to produce the aforesaid sum of four thousand seven hundred and forty-six pounds eleven shillings and threepence shall be made, raised, levied, and collected by the company; and, in further pursuance of the said power and authority, I do hereby direct that the dates on which the instalments of the said rates shall respectively be made payable shall be —As to the first equal instalment, the first day of May, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four; as to the second equal instalment, the first day of August, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four.
