NATIVE RESERVES AT GREYMOUTH, ARAHURA, HOKITIKA, KAIATA, AND HANARA. (RETURNS SENT IN BY MR. A. MACKAY SINCE JUNE, 1879.)

Return to an Order of the Souse of Representatives, dated sth August, 1880. " That there be laid upon the table all the returns sent in by Mr. A. Mackay since June, 1879, with reference to the Native reserves at Greymouth, Arahura, Hokitika, Kaiata, and Hanara, showing the names of the Maoris entitled thereto : the amounts they have received individually, and what moneys they have paid towards the improvement of those reserves, and towards the Commission ; also showing the amount of the money now in the hands of the Government, with interest thereupon ; and what rents they (the Government) have received altogether on the school reserves at Arahura."— (Mr. Tainui.)

In compliance with your letter of the 10th instant, I beg to forward herewith the information called for in the order made by the House of Representatives, under date the sth instant, on the motion of Mr. Tainui; but, in doing so, I would submit that, owing to the vague wording of the motion, I am unable to comprehend what is meant by the "names of the Natives entitled thereto," whether it is intended to comprise the whole of the persons who were admitted by consent at the sitting of the Commission in February, 1879, or whether the phrase merely embraces the names of the Natives included in the original list. If the former is the intention, the information has been already printed, and laid before the House, and can be found in the sessional papers G.-3is., Session 11., 1879, pages 19 to 21, under the head of Native Eeserves, Nos. 24, 30, 31, 33, and 34. If the latter is the information needed, the names will be found in the return herewith, marked A. The only amount paid for the improvement of the reserves since the date named in the order is £175 ss. 4d., being the balance of expenditure incurred for protective works at the Upper Arahura during the previous year. There has been no charge on the fund towards the cost of the Commission. The balance on hand at the 31st March was £439 Os. Bd. The total amount collected since that date from all sources to the 31st July amounts to £2,029 Os. 3d., and the expenditure to £986 15s. Bd., leaving a balance to that date, inclusive of the amount on hand on the 31st March, of £1,471 ss. 3d. No interest is allowed on moneys in the hands of the Government to the credit of the Greymouth Native Eeserve Pund, the account being a floating one. The amount collected from .the school reserve at Ahaura (not Arahura) to the 31st March, 1880, was £100 14s. 6d. The reserve is only occupied in part; the bulk of the land is very indifferent in character, and subject to be flooded. A. Mackat, The Under-Secretary, Native Department, Wellington.
