1881. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION. ANNUAL REPORT OF THE OTAGO UNIVERSITY. [In continuation of H.-1c, 1880.]

Presented to both Souses of the General Assembly by Command of Sis Excellency.

In compliance with "The Otago University Ordinance, 18G9," 1 have the honor to transmit to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the University for the year ending the 31st March, 1881." The session which opened on the Ist May last was attended by 110 students, of whom 4d are matriculated. Montgomery, McLean, Stuart, and Todd, passed the final examination for the B.A. degree; and Cattail, Miss Freeman, Jefl'coat, Hislop, Phillips, and Salmond passed the first section of that degree. The Senate of the New Zealand University have awarded to Cameron, Closs, and A. Montgomery senior scholarships, and to Miss Montgomery a junior scholarship. The Council reports that the course of instruction in the School of Mines has been earned out in conformity with the curriculum inserted in the calendar. Of five students enrolled, four entered for the division of Mining Engineer, and one for that of Mining Surveyor. The Council would remind your Excellency that the Director of the School of Mines is at the disposal of the Government for any purpose within his functions for four months of the vacation. During the past year the Director has been frequently called upon to give advice on various matters relating to mining, and has also inspected two gold mines. Professor Sir "Wyville Thomson, of Edinburgh, Professor Huxley and Dr. Carpenter, of London, the Commissioners selected by the Council to elect the Professor of Biology, were unanimous in appointing Mr. T. Jeffery Parker. B.Sc. of London University, Demonstrator to Professor Huxley at South Kensington Museum. The Professor-elect entered on his duties shortly after the commencement of last session. The chair of English Language and Literature, Constitutional History, and Political Economy recently erected by the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland, was filled by their Commissioners —viz., Professors Masson and Hodgson, of Edinburgh University ; Professor Morley, of University College, London; Dr. Abbott, Head Master of the City of London School; and Sheriff Campbell, of Edinburgh —giving the appointment to Mr. J. Mainwaring Brown, M.A., LL.M., of Christ's College, Cambridge, formerly Lecturer on the Cambridge University Extension Scheme. Professor Brown has arrived, and enters on his duties in May. The short course of popular lectures on chemistry delivered during the session was largely attended by the teachers of the common schools, who manifested great interest in the instruction imparted. The Richardson scholarship, value £40 per annum, tenaole for three years, was gained by Jolmstone. A lease of Bare wood Run for fourteen years was offered by auction, and purchased by Mr. David Proudfoot at a rental of £2,925, being a large increase on the rent of the previous term. An abstract of the accounts, showing the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending the 31st March, 1881, is appended to the report.
