1880. NEW ZEALAND.

NUMBERS OF SHEEP AND SHEEP ASSESSMENT COLLECTED (RETURN OF, FOR EACH PROVINCIAL DISTRICT).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 21st July, 1880. " That there be laid upon the table a return of the number of sheep, the amount of sheep assessment collected, and salaries paid to Sheep Inspectors, within each provincial district, during the last year."— {Mr. H. Hirst.)

Return showing (1) the Districts into which the Colony is divided for the purposes of "The Sheep Act, 1878;" (2) the Area of such Districts; (3) the Number of "Infected" Sheep in each District on 30th June, 1880, the Date of the last Quarterly Return; (4) the Number of Owners of Sheep in each District on 31st May, 1879; (5) the Number of Sheep upon which the Sheep-rate was collected for 1879; (6) the Amount of the Sheep-rate for 1879; (7) the Number of Sheep Inspectors residing in each District; and (8) the Amounts payable for Salaries and Allowances in each District.

Note. It is not possible to comply strictly with the terms of the order of the House of Representatives, the boundaries of the districts, as constituted under " Thij'Sheep Act, 1878," not being coterminous with the boundaries of the provincial districts. All districts contain flocks infected with " lice," more particularly the Napier, Canterbury, and Otago Districts. Colonial Secretary's Office, G-. S.
