PROPOSED SHIPMENT OF WHITEFISH OVA (PAPERS RELATIVE TO).

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command ofi His Excellency. No. 1. Mr. R. J. Creighton to the Hon. Mr. Macandrew. Daily and Weekly Post, north-east corner Sacramento and Montgomery Streets, Sir, — San Francisco, Ist September, 1879. In accordance with your instructions last year, I have arranged for an early shipment of whitefish ova on better terms than were then offered. Accompanying correspondence will explain what I have done. I shall take every pains to have the eggs forwarded in prime condition. Ton will perceive that I have taken precautions to have instructions prepared for their hatching by Air. Clark, who promises to send a model of his hatching-trough. Aly whitefish work will be on now in about three months, and I am making inquiries in regard to the numbers wanted. How about New Zealand ? Tou wrote me last winter they would reserve their order until this season. Tho order was for one million. Do you think they would want more ? Will furnish two millions for 1,000 dollars, and deliver them at Omaha, and see them properly shipped on the Union Pacific Railway. Enclosure 2 in No. 1. Mr. R. J. Creighton to Mr. H. Craig. Dear Sir,— 1 San Francisco, 28th July, 1879. I have an offer of two million whitefish eggs, delivered at Omaha, for 1,000 dollars. In reply to yours of 2Sth instant, I have much pleasure in stating that I will take one million whitefish ova on the terms you mention—namely, 500 dollars, delivered at Omaha in good order, to come with those for New Zealand Government. AVould it be possible to insure their safe arrival here by paying extra to shipper? I would rather do that if it can be managed, and run no risk from Omaha. Tours, Ac, Robert J. Creighton, Esq. Enclosure 4 in No. 1. Mr. R. J. Creighton to Mr. F. N. Clark. Dear Sir, — San Francisco, 6th August, 1879. In reply to your letter of July 18th, I have pleasure in stating that I will take two million whitefish eggs, delivered iv prime condition free on board the cars at Omaha for one thousand dollars, as you offer. I could not take them all for the New Zealand Government, but got Mr. Craig, of this city, to take half of the shipment on terms stated for the Auckland Acclimatization Society. He is very anxious about the eggs arriving in good condition, and wants to insure against risk by arranging with the shipper. I assured him that you would give all proper instruction to the Express Company's Agent. It will be necessary to keep them cold, without freezing, but away from the stove. As you remember, one shipment was spoiled from that cause. Let me know when we may expect them. The Australian steamer sails every fourth Alonday at noon : but the eggs should arrive, if possible, not later than Friday, to enable them to be properly packed in the ship's ice-house, which is always filled on Saturday. The last steamer sailed August 4th, so that you can calculate time of sailing. Tou will advise me by telegram of their departure and when we may expect them here. For payment, draw for 500 dollars on theNNcrw r Zealand Government, as on previous occasion, and for 500 dollars on Hugh Craig, Esq., N.Z. Insurance Company, San Francisco. I would also feel deeply indebted to you if you would write to me briefly a short note of how to dispose of the eggs and young fish to prevent accidents. My impression is that the eggs should be hatched out at the lake where they are to live, if possible. I think you said also that the young fish will live a week or ten days without food; if not, what kind of food, and how given ? These points I want to have authoritatively from you, as they are essential to the result of the experiment in New Zealand.
