EDUCATION. REPORT OF THE OTAGO UNIVERSITY FOR THE YEAR 1878.

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

The Ciiancellor to His Excellency the G-ovebnob. Sib,— University of Otago, 17th July, 1879. In compliance with "The Otago University Ordinance, 1869," I have the honor to transmit to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the University for the year ending 31st March, 1879 :— The session opened as usual on the Ist of May, with the same number of students as last session, though with a somewhat larger attendance ou the several classes, which will be seen by the following

At the last examination for the B.A. degree two of our undergraduates—Montgomery and Barclay —obtained that degree. For the first section of the examination Hendrv and McLean were successful, the former obtaining a senior scholarship in Latin and Mathematics, and the latter passing with great credit. The staff of the Medical School has been increased by the election of Mr. "William Brown, M.A., M.8., as Lecturer on Systematic Surgery. The appointment is made subject to Mr. Brown securing the recognition of his lectures by the University Court of the University of Edinburgh. Advices have been received from the Agent-General that the appliances and teaching material for the School of Mines have been shipped, and, as they may shortly be expected to arrive, the Professor of Mineralogy aud Metallurgy will be fully prepared to commence his lectures on the opening of the session. The Museum, under the curatorship of the Professor of Natural Science, is rendering good service to the University, and is appreciated by the community.

The Council has much pleasure in bringing under the notice of your Excellency the gratifying fact that large numbers of the teachers in the public schools avail themselves of special courses of lectures on chemistry and natural science delivered by professors of the University. The French lectureship has been filled by the election of Mr. Dallas, a gentleman of great experience as a French teacher, and recently attached to several scholastic institutions in Melbourne. In my last report I had the honor to mention that a second chair was likely to be established by the Synod of the Otago Presbyterian Church. I regret to say, however, that this has not yet been accomplished, owing to the Synod desiring to prescribe subjects for the proposed new chair which the Council considered amply provided for. The University buildings, commenced some eighteen months ago, and which are now about completed, will for some time afford ample accommodation for the arts course, and for the Schools of Medicine and Mines. In addition to the University buildings, houses have been erected for four professors. The cost of these buildings having considerably exceeded the estimate of the architect, the Council has been under the necessity of obtaining borrowing powers. The Council, after much consideration, resolved to renew its application for a royal charter. I am desired to say the Council feels grateful to your Excellency for having forwarded it. An abstract of the accounts, showing the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending 31st March, 1879, is appended to the report. I have, &c, To His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor H. S. Chapman, and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand. Chancellor.
