1878. NEW ZEALAND. CHARGES AGAINST THE JUDGES OF THE SUPREME COURT (CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT AND MR. BARTON, M.H.R., RELATIVE TO).

Sic, — Colonial Secretary's Office, "Wellington, 19th October, 1878. Referring to the speech made by you in the House yesterday evening, and the charges made by you as a member of the House and one of the leaders of the bar, against two of the Supreme Court Judges, I have the honor to ask you whether you have any objection to particularly specify in writing the charges you desire to make against their honors the Chief Justice and Mr. Justice Richmond. The object I have in writing to you is that, until the charges are particularized in writing, the Government is unable to consider what steps it may deem necessary to take in the matter. I have, &c., G-. E. Barton, Esq., M.H.R., Wellington. G. S. Whitmoee. No. 2. Mr. G. E. Baeton, M.H.R., to the Hon. the Colonial Seceetaey. Sic, — Brandon Street, 19th October, 1878. I have the honor to acknowledge your letter of this day's date, received this afternoon, asking me if I have any objection to particularly specify in writing the charges I desire to make against their honors the Chief Justice and Mr. Justice Richmond, and informing me that the object you have in writing to me is that, until the charges are particularized in writing, the Government are unable to consider what steps it may deem necessary to take in the matter. In reply, I have the honor to state that I will forward to the Government the Hansard report of the speech referred to, so soon as I can obtain it from the printer; and, if an inquiry is instituted, I shall be ready to supply to the Commissioners any farther details they may require.
