Continuous dray road northwards from the Wairoa navigation, divided into 4 sections, — (a.) Wairoa and Mangakawhia Junction to Mangakawhia Valley, 10 to 12 miles through bush and scrub. This to be surveyed and reported on (b.) Mangakawhia Valley to open high country, about 6 miles, to be made by Native labour, at (c.) From end of Section B to Kaikohe, about 20 miles, to be made by Native labour, at a cost not exceeding ... ... ... (d.) Kaikohe to the Waimate Road, estimated cost... la. Wainia and Waimate Roads, junction to the Falls to be improved by cutting round Pukitutu Hill, estimated cost... Day labour. 4 miles 60 chains are in progress by Native labour. 700 0 0 500 0 0 Day labour. 8 miles 60 chains are in progress by Native labour. 8 miles offered to Natives, but arrangements not yet completed. This line is being altered and improved. No work has yet been done. 567 2 6 This was to be surveyed and reported. Mr. Aicken examined the ground and laid off a line to the Ti, a place where the steamers lie, but the subject requires further consideration, and will be reported on at a later date. Surveyed by Mr. G. Aicken, who gives choice of three lines —the best, 16J miles, at a cost of £10,050 ; line called A, 21 miles 5 chains, estimated at £14,175; line called B, 21 miles 4 chains, estimated at £14,100. The highest points on these lines are respectively, 500, 650, and 800 feet. The estimate for a horse track on the proposed line is £2,500, and its construction has been authorized. Survey being proceeded with by J. J. Wilson. First report, April 29. None received since. This work has been contracted for; date of contract, April 18. To be surveyed and reported on. Report to be obtained how the sum of £400 can be best expended in opening up this district with bridle tracks for bringing out gum (kauri). This is not considered to bo of importance. The report will be deferred till next spring. This line has been surveyed by the Provincial Government, to whom application will be made for the plans and estimates, with a view to forward the work; but an engineering survey will be required before work is commenced. A diversion of the present lino is proposed so as to avoid the Bluff. This wiil bo examined and reported on. No report received yet. i 11. Kawa Kawa to the Bay Road, 12 miles .2.
