I. —Aeea and Land Sales. THe area of the district supplied from Oamaru may be thus described: — Miles. Sq. Miles. Acres. Oanmru to Otepopo ... 28x15 = 420 = 260,800 Waitaki, Otago side ... 80x20 = 1,600) lAWannn Wiiitaki, Canterbury side ... 70x10 = 700 j ~ I'*'AUUU 2,720 1,738,80U The land in the Oamaru and Otepopo Districts is two-thirds arable ; the Waitaki consists chiclly of sheep and cattle pasture land. The land declared into hundreds is as follows: —Maercwhenua, 42,880; Awamoko, 45,G40; Kakanui, 51,840; Oamaru, 87,040; Otepopo, 53,7(50; total acreage, 284,100. Of this extent of country, the following areas have been sold:—Maerewhenua, 29,204; Awamoko, 20,395; Kakanui, 13,400; Oamaru, 6G,G44 ; Otepopo, 18,247 ; total acreage sold, 147,890, realising a sum of £190,910, which, added to £12,877 received from sales of Town Lands, makes up a total revenue from Land Sales in the district of £203,797. The revenue derived from Eural Land Sales in the Province (from July, 18(35, to February, 1866, inclusive,) amounted to £68,891 lGs. 6d. : of this sum the Oamaru District contributed £53,304. These figures are compiled from Official Returns made up to 31st March, 1866. From the same source it is ascertained that up to 30th September, 18G5, the expenditure on roads within the district amounted to £30,980. Large areas have been sold since 31st March, and fencing and the cultivation of the soil are progressing rap idly. ll.—Population. The export of grain, building stone, lime, and other products, is rapidly increasing, but of these there are no Returns. IV.—ljipoets, Customs Revenue, Etc. Xo complete Returns.
