No. 1.
ME. MORRISON, COLONIAL AGENT, TO THE THE COLONIAL SECRETARY. Office of the New Zealand Government Agency, 3, Adelaide Place, King William Street, London, 24th June, 1861. Sir, — I beg leave to direct your attention to the annexed extract, being a question which Mr. Adderley put to the Under-Secretary for the Colonies in the House of Commons on the 21st inst., and the reply it elicited. These extracts I have taken from the report of the Times newspaper. I have, &c, John Morrison. The Honorable the Colonial Secretary, Auckland.
(No. 306.)
Enclosure. " Mr. Adderley asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, now that the Rebellion in New Zealand was suppressed, the Government were taking such steps as would tend to extricate this country from any future implication in Native policy, and whether they would now advise Her Majesty to give assent to the Native Council Bill sent by the New Zealand Legislature for Her approval."
" Mr. C. Fortescue said a new Governor, Sir G. Grey, had been appointed, and had been desired to report to the Government upon the whole subject. It would, therefore, be wrong to fetter his discretion by advising the Crown to assent to the Native Council Bill. Her Majesty's Government had no disinclination to assent to that Bill, but they would reserve their final decision until they had received the report from Sir G. Grey." (Hear, hear.)
