The title of the newspaper, Nga Hiiringa i te Whitu: The Seals made by Te Whitu, refers to the seals or resolutions made by Te Whitu Huakatoa, Chairman of the County Council of the Kingitanga, which included Waikato, Patetere (west of Rotorua) and Piako.

This paper published a report of the first meeting of the Council in 1896, with a list of the 18 resolutions passed. The editor was probably the Secretary of the Council, T K T Waitangi.

Only one issue has been located (12 October 1896).  For further information about the newspaper, see P Parkinson and P Griffith, Books in Maori (Auckland: Reed, 2004), S37, p. 805.

The National Library would like to thank Gail Dallimore for providing information used in essays about Maori newspapers.
