£lO FINE F?R NEGLIGENCE UNLICENSED GOODS SERVICE The Transport Department prosecuted a number of motorists in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M. For having no warrant of fitness, Robert Leith McCheane, Hamilton, was fined 5s and Harold Reginald Dobbie, Kihikihi, 10s, besides 10s for having no driving license; Robert Lionel Lovell, Hamilton, for having defective brakes was fined £1 10s; Waikato Hide and Skins Company, no rear vision mirror, 10s; Arthur I Gordon Bainbridgc, defective foot I brakes, ss; George Walsh, Rukuhia, defective brakes. £2; William Arthur Westgate, defective brakes and no j warrant of fitness, £l. Alfred William Kennedy, farm i hand, Whatawhata, was fined £2 for I driving a motor-cycle without care j and attention in London Street, Ham- ; ilton, on the night of September 27, I when he was involved in a collision. ! Waikato Cabs Limited (Mr J. F. Strang) was ordered to pay costs on three charges of failing to display in a prominent position in a taxi-cab 1 a service license. Inspector A. E. Hodgson, prosecuting for the Transj Port Department, said the company had 20 licenses (the limit) and operated 23 cabs on certain days. On the | occasion of a recent race meeting i three cabs were found not to have licenses displayed. | Fine For Negligence I For negligent driving at 10.15 p.m. on November 2, in Commerce Street, | Frankton, Richard Jo hua Donovan, j motor mechanic, Hami\on, was fined j £lO. The police evidence was that ' Donovan’s car was involved in a i collision, and later, when questioned ! at his home by Constable A. Gudsell, he admitted he had been at fault, explaining that he was very tired and had had some drink. Mr N. S. Johnson, for defendant, said his client had readily admitted his responsibility, j John Francis Smythe. contractor, Papakura, was fined £1 10s for carrying on an unlicensed goods service between Karapiro and Papakura. Defendant said he did not know a license was necessary to carry his own goods. Inspector A. E. Hodgson said regulations issued in 1939 required Smythe to have a license, i He was actually competing with the 1 railways for more than 30 miles.
