TOPICS OF THE DAY
Italy s Objectives Italy had two objects in view. She wanted to gain control of the Adriatic and she desired a road to the Balkans, which would enable her to command the destinies of the Balkan States. The downfall of Albania, brought about firstly by a show of friendship and then by subjection and force, was to be the prelude to the downfall of Greece and probably other States as well. It was to be the end of the Balkans for the Balkan peoples in the same way as the German threats to Rumania were intended also to achieve that purpose. It was to be the end of nationalities achieving their own destinies and finding strength through a free co-operation and the elimination of difficulties by a policy of negotiation. Both Germany and Italy know how easy it is to rouse up the past in the Balkans, and therefore they were determined that the new methods of conciliation and of people working cut their future by give and take should not, if they could prevent it, have time to lake effect.—Empire Review.
