WORK SUSPENDED
RAILWAY DEVIATION PALMERSTON NORTH SCHEME • (By Telegraph.—press Association) WELLINGTON. Tuesday The Government has decided to suspend construction work on the Palmerston North railway deviation for the duration of t tie war. according to an announcement made today by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. Among the reasons lor the decision were that the necessary material was not available nor was the necessary labour. The Minister made it plain that there was no intention to abandon the deviation, which, after the war, should provide useful employment lor a number of men in Palmerston North. There were only a lew men employed by the Public Works Department on the deviation at present, said Mr Armstrong, and these men would be transferred to other work.
