LONGER HOURS URGED

NATION’S WAR EFFORT Considerable discussion of the nation’s war effort was provoked at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night when Mr W. H. Adams urged that the Chamber should make furtner representations to the Government that the country would not be using its resources to the fullest advantage until the 40 hour week was abandoned. Mr A. J. Yendell criticised the action of Horotiu Freezing Works’ employees who stopped work early on Saturday so as to attend the races and regatta and who took another holiday yesterday, thus causing a considerable decrease for the week in the number of animals killed. Mr T. Shaw thought that a general desire existed on the part of workers to put in longer nours. It was decided to write to the Associated Chambers of Commerce asking them to urge the Government to extend the 40-hour week either by legislation or by the voluntary consent of the workers.
