EQUALITY IN SERVICE

(To the Editor) i i Sir,—ln your editorial of Wedraes- : day last you have penned a timely : j word of warning in respect to the • : railway workshop strike. You state • l an awakening is necessary if New • 1 Zealand is to give of its best in tbis war. In the same paper, in your local and general column, several of the legal fraternity express thieir “profound regret” at being unable to work on Thursday, the opening day .of the Trentham races. Now, in the name of common sense, where is the equal war effort between threse tavo ■ sets of workers? | One group stands up for the prin--1 ciple of the 40-hour week, laid down ! by their employers, and are sneered ; at by quite a few New Zealanders, , always ready to put the worker in his place, as they term it. Yet our j Chief Justice is reported to have | “joined in the laughter,” and then allowed these other gentlemen to at- ! tend the races. When are we gcxing ;to get. total conscription and eqjual • sacrifice? Don’t be too hard on the ! worker; he will do more and give more cheerfully, but not till e\*ery ' section of the community does his : share too. | Who constitutes the bulk of our J Army and Air Force? The worker, j the same type that is carrying on | production at home, and will do ! more if it is wanted, but he neseds |to be treated as a gentleman. He !is blessed with ordinary common ! sense and expects the same from his ! leader—not abuse and contempt j from people who perhaps are not I even his equal.—l am, etc., i UNIONIST, | Frankton, March 15.
