SWIMMER DROWNED
CAUGHT IN UNDERTOW TRYING TO REACH DINGHY (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Monday While swimming off Wilson’s Beach, Hobson Bay, at 7.45 yesterday morning a man was drowned. He was Mr Cecil Rowland Arthur Gordon Bowyer, aged 37, telegraphist at the Remuera Post Office, oi 36 Ranfurly Road East, Epsom. He was married and had two small children. With a friend, Mr Allen Charles Kerr, of 18 Woodside Road, Mount Eden, Mr Bowyer intended to go fishing in a dinghy, which was anchored about 80 yards from the shore. He started to swim out to bring in the dinghy, but after he had gone about 50 yards he got into difficulties and called for help. Mr Kerr plunged in and swam out about 40 yards, but was forced to return to the shore owing to the strong undertow. Meanwhile Mr Bowyer disappeared. The tide was almost full when the accident happened, and was still coming in. A police party with Sergeant H. Welch, of Newmarket, in charge, recovered the body at low tide at about 12.45 p.m.
