IMPRESSED VEHICLES
FOR ARMY MANOEUVRES
j FAR SHORT OF REQUIREMENTS i Official information as to the j number of vehicles sur- ; rendered by owners under the Army , Department's impressment orders i are not available, but it is known j that up to Saturday night only 21 ! vehicles were in the hands of the | reception officers r.t Claudelands j Showgrounds. This 21 was very far i short of the requirements, which ■ were said to total 300 vehicles. In Auckland 11 trucks and 123 motor-cycles were delivered. The j original plan provided for. 597 trucks and 303 motor-cycles. ! The halt in plans means that the j scheme for Army manoeuvres in j North Auckland this week will not | be carried out m its entirety, for
lack of transport. The authorities have not yet made known what is intended for the future, though it is generally understood efforts will be made to give the Army all available vehicles to carry on a curtailed scheme of manoeuvres. Many of the troops who are to take part in the manoeuvres are due for demobilisation, after three months of intensive training, at the end of this month, and little time remains to secure the vehicles necessary to carry out the plan in ■its original form.
