FURTHER RATIONING
PRESERVES GROUP MOVE IN BRITAIN (Official wireless) (Received March 15, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, March 14 Jam, marmalade, syrup and treacle will, from March 17, be rationed together as a group known as preserves ration. Preserves per head per month will be 8 ounces. Announcing the scheme the Ministry of food explains that rationing hitherto has been confined to essential food, which can readily be shared out equally. The rationing of jam alone would merely lead to an increased demand for alternatives such as marmalade, syrup and treacle. Accordingly these four inter-changeable foodstuffs are being treated as a group and although customers’ preference will be met so far as is possible, he will not be able to insist upon having any one particular food from the group. Facilitating Feeding The Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, made an order conferring upon any local authority, except councils of boroughs in the areas of the London County Council, the power to give directions to caterers within the area. These directions may be given on the following matters: Serving meals and the hour or any dhy; the nature of the meals; prices to be charged for meals; cooking of food for consumption off premises; the use of vehicles and methods of transport; and the employment of staff for the purpose of carrying out directions given. The object of the order is to facilitate the provision of meals in an emergency.
