SURPLUS OF £2,400,000 NEARLY ALL RECORDS BROKEN (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) CAPETOWN, March 13 Presenting the Railway Budget in Parliament, the Minister of Railways, Mr F. S. Sturrock. announced a surplus of £2,400,000, breaking nearly all records for railway working. Over 7000 railway men had been released for military duties, he said. In addition, 1200 men were working full-time, and 800 part-time on munitions production m railway workshops. These were turning out a great variety of armaments, including 3.7in. howitzers, bomb parts, armoured cars and machine-gun mountings. A committee was being appointed to investigate workshops expansion.
