LIQUOR SUPPLIED
PURCHASE FOR SOLDIERS The charge of supplying intoxicaing liquor to members of the Defence Forces for consumption off the premises was admitted by Allen Eade, clerk, of Frankton. in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. On March 8 Sergeant Fryer saw Eade walking with two soldiers to the Frankton railway yards, stated Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh, when prosecuting. As they went up the ramp defendant handed a parcel to the soldiers, which he later admitted contained bottles of beer. He said the soldiers had given him £1 to purchase some liquor, which he did. He was unaware that it constituted an offence and he always liked to assist soldiers. “ That’s the trouble. He is leading them astray,” interposed the magistrate, Mr W. H. Freeman. Appearing for defendant Mr D. W. Arcus said that his client regretted the circumstances. “ I suppose he regretted being found out,” remarked Mr Freeman in imposing a fine of £2 and costs. Suppression of the name was refused.
