GALLANTRY ON FIELD

LATEST LIST OF AWARDS INDIAN OFFICERS’ BRAVERY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, March 12 British and Indian officers and nan-commissioned officers share the honours in the latest list of War Office awards for gallantry on the field. The announcement of the award of the D.S.O. to Major (acting Lieuten-ant-Colonel) S. E. Taylor states that he was in command of troops assaulting a position, and the success of the attack was largely due to his personal example. An account of an incident in India resulting in the award of the M.C. to Subadar Umrao Singh, 19th Hyderabad Regiment, states that during operations in December a company of the Hyderabad Regiment under Singh counter-attacked and took a difficult feature which had been captured by tribal Lashkar. It was too dark to withdraw his company, and the position was completely isolated. Singh skilfully organised the position, although completely surrounded. During the night the position was attacked several times. One platoon post was rushed, but the subadar immediately organised and launched a counter-attack with grenades which retook the position. The company maintained the position until relieved by day. Singh displayed the highest qualities <*f leadership throughout.
