QUESTIONS IN HOUSE
SHEEP FOR TWOPENCE SALE IN BACK COUNTRY {Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Thursday A report that sheep had been sold at under twopence each at Lake Tekapo this month was contained in a question of which Mr T. D. Burnett (Opposition—Temuka) gave notice in the House of Representatives today. He asked the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, if he has seen an account of the Mackenzie Country annual sheep sale where a line of 460 sheep was sold for £3 10s for the mob, or slightly under twopence each, and if he could advise Crown tenants of the back country how to meet their Crown rents, rates, taxes and wages on such a basis. Mr Burnett added that a few weeks ago the same class of sheep was bringing 15s to 20s each. Pip-fruit Trees A suggestion that further planting of pip-fruit trees should be subjected to departmental license was contained in a question, notice of which was given by Mr E. L. Cullen (Government —Hawke’s Bay). He asked the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, whether he would insist on this being done in fairness to the Internal Marketing Department and growers alike. I In a note 4o his question, Mr CuUen said that while it was true there was a growing demand for canning peaches there already existed a sufficiently large supply of pip fruit, especially apples, to meet both the export and the local markets even in normal times. Further indiscriminate planting of apple trees would simply add to the difficulties | uf the department and the growers.
