STRIKE IN AMERICA
BUS COMPANY EMPLOYEES UNION REFUSES MEDIATION HIGHER WAGES DEMANDED (United press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK, March 11 The strike of bus company employees does not show any signs of an early settlement. The companies have published full-page advertisements in many newspapers showing that the employees’ rates of pay compare more than favourably with those of automobile and aircraft workers. The bus companies offered mediation, but the union refused. Meanwhile the subway and elevated lines are jammed to capacity and taxi-cab revenues have soared. Nearly 1,000,000 passengers were carried on the buses daily, which constitutes 95 per cent, of the New York surface transportation. The union demands include an increase of 25 per cent, in wages and three weeks* holiday instead of two weeks.
