DESPITE THE WAR

PROGRESS REPORTED SHOW SOCIETY’S YEAR JUBILEE TO BE CELEBRATED The progress of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association is reviewed in the annual report of the association to be presented by the president, Mr W. R. J. Franklin, at the annual meeting on March 27. The attendance at last year’s show was very good, states the report. It represented an increase on the previous year. Entries were excellent in quality and the entry fees were probably a record for the association, excluding the Waikato Royal Show. During the year the 7th Medium Battery held a training camp on the grounds, which proved very suitable for the purpose. The grounds had been well maintained and additional horse paddocks and drafting yards for fat cattle had been erected by working bees, which as usual were well supported by members and friends. The membership showed a slight decrease but still remains at over 1000. Financial Position The financial position had again improved during the year, the sum of £792 being added to the capital account, which now stood at £11,208. The mortgage on the property had been reduced by £3OO and was now £4500. Life member subscriptions had been used for this purpose. A sum of £SOO had been lent to the New Zealand Government free of interest for the duration of the war.

During the year some of the old supporters of the show had died, among them being Messrs K. Bankier, G. Powell, H. E. Potter, G. W. Vercoe, R. T. Reid, W. Runciman and T. Riddell. all of whom were of great assistance in establishing the show’ on a solid basis. The sympathy of the association was extended to their relatives. The next show, concludes the report, would be the jubilee show of the association, the show's having been held annually since 1892. It was unfortunate that the show would take place during the war, but the committee felt that in spite of war conditions a special effort should be made to stage a show worthy of the occasion
