DOMINION INDUSTRY NEW PLANT REQUIRED The determination of the Minister i of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, and the Government to establish an iron and steel ind Istry in New Zealand is stated b3 r the Labour newspaper, the J Standard. “With thj. l object of utilising the j steel scrap of the Dominion, amount- j ing to 10,000 tons per annum, which ! would be converted to a similar , quantity of new steel,” says the ; newspaper, “the Government has authorised its advisors in Great i Britain, Messrs Brassert and Com- \ pany, who designed the major | scheme approved by the Government, ■ to purchase anywhere in the quick- j est time that it can be secured, plant ’ including electric furnaces and a 1 rolling mill. "This plant if it can be secured, I and the Government is doing its ; utmost to obtain it, will later be in- * corporated in the major scheme for i producing iron and steel in New Zea- ; land based upon the use of Onekaka iron ore and New Zealand ironsands. ■ In the meantime also the present : plant at Onekaka will be reconditioned and brought into use for the purpose of ensuring security in supplies of pig iron.”
