With the hope of encouraging and perpetuating the quaint and picturesque canoe races, poi dances and hakas of the Maori, the Ngaruawahia regatta was established and reward for that enterprise has been won in the fame of the annual river carnival at the junction of the Waikato and Waipa rivers. The importance of encouraging the Maori to preserve his old pastimes has impressed itself on the association each year. No effort has been spared to fan the spirit of competition among the natives and to accomplish this the Ngaruawahia Regatta Association has assisted them in the renovation of their canoes, facilitated the journey to the regatta of visiting Maoris and has aided the ambitious Waikatos in their project to construct great new war canoes. Appreciation of the work is expressed annually by the public in their everincreasing patronage of the carnival. The largest proportion of the big prize-money goes to the Maoris. Strong Financial Position The association has not always enjoyed its present financial prosperity. Had it not been for publicspirited members in the past, it would have long since been dissolved. It has been the aim of far-sighted members of the past to create, at the junction of the two picturesque rivers, a park that will be unequalled lor river scenery in New Zealand. With this worthy object to inspire the efforts of the association, surplus funds have been devoted to the purchase of various unsightly cottages in the vicinity of the regatta grounds, to their demolition and to adding the land to the park. The fulfilment of this ambition is near realisation. Full Programme A full programme of Maori canoe races, pois, hakas, rowing, piping and national dancing has been arranged, and with the greatest assortment of side-shows in the Dominion this year’s fixture will undoubtedly prove a major success. The banks of the river have been sloped to accommodate some 18,000 people and at the junction of these two rivers is found one of the finest picnic spots in the Waikato. Hot water is provided free, and with the comprehensive train arrangements the Ngaruawahia Regatta will be one of the outstanding entertainments of the year.
