Beginning smartly, lie set the early pace and though iic was headed by Vanson across the top be again took the initiative entering the straight and held on in the run home to score very decisively. Along the buck be made play from the favourite, Vanson, and after the latter had shaded him at the half-mile he ran past him turning for home the pair being followed at this stage by Cyone Girl, and Marminga, with a gap or six lengths to Auto Bingen, w'no was heading the others. Nothing had a chance with Franco at the end and he carried on to win by two lengths from Cyone Girl, who llnished resolutely to beat Marminga by a neck. Stewart, To Rapa. Crucible completed the second leg of the “stable double" wheat she won the Kopu Handicap, but it was only tbe outstanding driving tactics or Stewart that achieved success. Hemmed in for the greater part of tbe journey, it was not until half-way down the running and lie managed to secure an opening, and then he drove the favourite through to prevail in a blanket linish over Bedford and Katene, who had set a torrid pace for the greater part. Crucible went to the Tront rrom the outset, but with a couple of furlongs covered Katene ran up on tlie outside of Crucible and the pair was followed half-a-mile rrom home by Lynn Rey, Kewpie’s Queen and Bedford, with Kete Kura following in front of Princess Linnett. There was no alteration as they turned for home, Crucible winning by half a bead rrom Bedford with Katene only a head away.
