NAZI TREACHERY

GREEK REVELATIONS j I I OPEN LE I TER TO HITLER j ! ‘ ■ ! BRITAIN ANSWERS CALL 'United Press Assn.—Eiec. Te!. Copyright) (Received March 10, 10.40 a.m.) ATHENS. March 9 Revealing that Germany lulled Greece into a false sense of security before the Italian attack, M. Georges 1 Vlachos, director of the newspaper Kathimerini, in an open letter to Hit--1 ler, declared: j When the torpedoing of the cruiser Helle demonstrated that Mussolini’s signature was worthless, we did not appeal to England but to you. Ido not know your answer but I know from letters ! by General Metaxas that Germany said that we must not mobilise and : must remain calm and give no pre- I text to the Italians. “But the Italians declared war on Greece. We therefore turned to Britain, who, despite her own diffi- j culties. answered the call imme- i diately and unconditionally.” Referring to the concentration of ■ German forces in Bulgaria, M. ! Vlachos added: “The little Greek Army if called on will do in Thrace what it has already done in Epirus. We will fight to the death.” i l NAZIS IN CONTROL SUBJUGATION OF ITALY i ALL HIGH POSITIONS HELD j (United Press Assn.--Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, March 8 | Germany’s subjugation of Italy is complete, says the Lisbon correspondent of the Times, but not flam- ‘ buoyant, because it has been achieved through the Fascist Party. The Germans control every high ! State position, although retaining the established official as a “Quisling.” Italy actually becomes occupied territory, but the occupation was ’ achieved by political means. In the economic field the Italian war effort has virtually ceased. Scarcely any aeroplanes are being built because of the lack of raw materials. The Daily Telegraph's Lisbon correspondent says it is reliably reported that 300,000 German airmen and soldiers are in Italy. Nearly two-thirds of this force, including all the land forces, are based on Naples. Sicily is virtually a German island. The Germans are also manning a chain of air bases from Lombardy to Calabria. They have brought their own aeroplane fuel because of the poor quality of Italian supplies. Hitler’s real grip on Italy lies in the fact that he has placed his own key men in the Ministries. German i “commissions” have taken control of | Italian factories and have engaged * in the production of munitions and other vital war necessities. The Lisbon correspondent of the Times says it is unlikely the German troops in Africa can be greatly reinforced. The troops already landed [ were part of a wider strategy which j might have developed if the Italians had not collapsed. They are at present engaged in the negative role of keeping Sir Archibald Wavell from General Weygand. Press Censorship Abolished The Oavas news agency says the press censorship in unoccupied France will shortly be abolished. Newspapers will be allowed full latitude to print news as received and to comment on , it. The Government will still exercise control of the press, but only after publication, should the need arise. MARRIAGE TO ALIENS BRITISH WOMEN’S POSITION REMOVAL OF RESTRICTIONS (omcial wireless) RUGBY. March 7 Mr H. Morrison has made an order exempting women who have lost their British nationality by marriage to aliens from most of the wartime restrictions to which they have been subjected—the restrictions imposed by orders made in 1940 and 1941. They have also been relieved of an obligation to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Labour before taking employment. On the other hand, such of these women as are not registered with i the police are required by order to do so.
