READY FOR NEW SEASON

LOCHIEL GOLF CLUB IMPROVEMENTS TO COURSE The Lochiel Golf Club will officially open its 1941 winter season on Saturday, March 29. The links, which have been playable during the summer, will, in spite of the long dry spell, open in very good order and the many improvements which have been carried qjit will be appreciated by members. The club members have built three new greens during the summer months, besides adding a large implement shed to the club’s assets, and a good coat of red paint to the huge clubhouse roof strikes a pleasant note against its background of pine trees, gums and poplars. Of the three new greens put down during the summer, the 4th, sth and 11th, the 4th alone indicates the magnitude of the tasks which this club shoulders and takes in its stride, due to the determination of its members to get things done. In the formation of this green thousands of yards of shingle were moved and levelled and moulded to the correct contour. Work of Volunteers Then for seven week-ends an army of volunteer workers set out to cover the whole area with clay, sand and soil, to make the finished product. In one day alone over 100 tons of soil were dug, carted and spread on this one green. The green will be sown down in a few days and will be ready for play during the season, and work which many a bigger club would have shelved for years will be completed. In its third year on its new property the club is facing its second year of administration under wartime conditions, and with approximately 40 of its members serving with the forces a fall in membership is anticipated. The club is, however, in a strong position financially and with the co-operation of those members still able to use the links, great hopes are expressed for the future. The addition of a dining room to the club buildings last year and the installation of a caterer, making light meals available at all times, greatly added to the comfort and convenience of members and proved very popular. It has been another step along the way towards making the Lochiel links a very pleasant place to spend the week-ends during the winter. The official opening day at this club is always a very cheerful and hospitable occasion, and any prospective members are always made very welcome by the committee.
