SWIMMING CARNIVAL

SATURDAY S CHAMPIONSHIPS SOUTH AUCKLAND CENTRE Public and swimmers alike will be treated to excellent swimmiing. diving and water polo on Saturday night at the Municipal Baths, Hamilton, when 1 the South Auckland senior men’s championships will be held. Apart from the championship events the Swimming Centre had taken a lead and has arranged for a team of seven prominent Auckland swimmers to appear at the carnival. The carnival which is being conducted by the South Auckland Centre has as its main object the senior men’s championship events, as follows: 100 and 200 yards freestyle, 100 and 220 yards breaststroke, 100 yards breaststroke and dive. Excellent fields are expected in all races and additional interest will be lent by the appearance of the Auckland swimmers. Handicap events will also be a feature of the programme, and there promises to be some close finishes in the grade events. All styles are covered, including freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Attempts on Records M. Allen of the Y.M.C.A. Club, Hamilton, is going to make an attempt on the 100 yards intermediate boys’ South Auckland freestyle record, and it is more than probable that he will improve the existing time. Allen, a very premising swimmer, although still only a schoolboy, is a powerful stylist and has every chance of making a name lor himself in swimming circles. Only recently he won the senior title at the Hamilton High School in face of strong opposition.

L. Brewster, another youngster, who hails from the Morrinsville Club, will make an attack on the 440 yards South Auckland intermediate boys’ freestyle record. Brewster has shown fine promise this season, and the centre was well justified in asking to make the trip to the New Zealand meeting, held at New Plymouth about a month ago. Although Brew-

ster did not gain a first he gave a very creditable performance, and one New Zealand coach prophesied that he would make a name for himself in the near future.
