“OUTSIDER” GOVERNORS
RESENTMENT IN ALASKA OPPOSITION IN LEGISLATURE ENTIRE PROGRAMME REJECTED (United Press Assn.—tier.. Tel. Copyright) (Received March 7, 3.15 p.m.) ALASKA, March 6 The resentment of Alaskan residents at the appointment of “outsider” territorial Governors flared up at a night session of the Legislature. A few minutes after the Governor, Mr Ernest Gruening, had personally addressed the body in an effort to save his legislative programme, legislators firstly permitted the submission of the bill transferring Mr Gruening’s administrative powers to an Administrator-General to be elected by the Legislature; secondly passed a resolution opposing the appointment of any future non-Alaskan Governors; and thirdly, voted down Mr Gruening’s entire programme, also the Income Tax Bill and the project to build armouries in Alaska. It will be recalled that the Alaskans protested vigorously when President Roosevelt appointed -.Mr Gruening last year.
