FORCE OF OVER 100,000 DIVE=BOMBERS AND TANKS IS IT DRIVE TO SUEZ? (United Press Assn.—Elec, Tel. Copyright) (Received March 7, 11.0 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 6 The New York Times states that according: to exclusive information received from official American sources Germany is sending troops in force to Libya, now totalling in excess of 100,000, including dive bombers and over 1000 tanks. Th-e movement has been in progress for over a week and there is steadily growing conjecture as to whether it means an initial movement for a drive to Egypt and Suez as part of a pincer on the other side, which would be a descent from the Balkans. The manner of transportation to Libya has not yet been ascertained, but it is believed to have been via islands in the eastern Mediterranean, free from British interference. ASKED TO CLOSE ITALIAN CONSULATES REQUEST BY AMERICA (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received March 7, 11.0 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 6 It is announced that the United States has requested Italy to close the Italian Consulates at Detroit and Newark “for reasons of national policy.” A State Department announcement said: “For reasons of national policy it had been decided that foreign consulates in certain areas should be closed. The Italian Government has been requested to close the consulates at Detroit and Newark and to withdraw the personnel.” The tone ol' Mr Cordell Hull’s Note to the Italian Government has -I-... no ouubi. tfiaC the move is in retaliation for Italian action against American consular officials in Italy. The Italian uipiomatic stall in "Washington is excluded from the request, but the Embassy has been asked to keep the State Department currently informed of the movements outside Washington of the military and naval personnel attached to the Embassy. KING AND QUEEN VISIT TO GLASGOW GREETED BY BIG CROWDS (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyrlghl) LONDON, March 6 The King and Queen yesterday paid an eight-hour visit to Glasgow, where they visited shipyards, factories, technical colleges and air-raid precautions centres. Although Their Majesties’ visit was not announced, huge crowds of people assembled to greet them as they passed through the streets.
