JUMP FROM TRAIN
ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE HANDCUFFED PRISONERS BOTH MEN RE-CAPTURED (By Telegraph.—rrcss Association) TAUMARUNUI, Thursday Two prisoners, Stanley Clive Bernasconi and Ernest Arthur Tremere Johnstone, handcuffed together jumped from the Limited Express at 4 o'clock this morning near the signal box as it was leaving Tauinarunui. The escapees, with other prisoners, were in charge v>f two warders and were going to Mount Eden gaol. One warder. Mr McGeorge, of Paparoa, jumped after them but he could not find them. The local police joined the chase and at 4.20 a.m. McGeorge re-captured Johnstone who still had the handcuffs attached to his wrist. At 5.10 a.m. Constable White caught Bernasconi near the railway station. Johnstone escaped from the National Park prison recently and was recaptured at Raetihi.
