CONCERT FOR SOLDIERS

MATAMATA ENTERTAINMENT (Special to Times.) MATAMATA, Wednesday The Mayor, Mr W. A. Gordon, presided over a large audience at the Matamata Town Hall, when people rrom a wide radius attended to honour the men of the district at present on leave. The Matamata Band, under the conductorship of Mr Wilbert Maries, combined with members or the Local Women’s War Service Auxiliary to present a most enjoyable programme. Tbe first half of the musical programme opened with selection* by the band which was followed by a well staged camp fire by Mesdames M. Ralph, Rex. Gardiner, Russell white and Misses 11. and T. Chilton, J. McVlnnle, C. Mears, M. Hunt, M. Brunton, J. Burnett, R. Bain, it. Catley. il D-uxlleld. P. Simpson and M. Mackie. This item was very well received a< were two character -sketches by Mrs C. Wade. Messrs Eric Bygrove, Don Cameron and Kevin Cotter. Presentation to Men Presentations were made to the follow- ! ing 23 men, sgt. W. A. Mac Gibbon, Sgt. ; Pilot G. Woodruofe, Gunners R. G. Thtrlwall, J. D. Findlay, F. B. Burke and H. Uaipn, Sapper M. u. Turner, Driver R. J. Relsma, signall-rs j. a. a.iu L. G. Stanley, Trooper, it. R. Hudson, Priv- ; ate-s A. B. Jackson, J. W. Hair, D. H. Hunt. R. M. Farndale, W. R. Adams, W K. and J. Pennell, It. J. R. and G. R. Gray, i G. C. Mitchell, M. L. Clarke and A. E. At the conclusion or the presentation , cenmonv the men, whose obvious fitness and soldierly bearing drew most favourable comment, were accorded musical honours. Sergeant Mac-Gibbon expressed the j thanks of himself and his comrades, for the kindness extended to them. The second half or the programme j opened with a solo by Private It. J. Gray, j duets by It. Grey and Mi-s Nessie Pennell and by Misses Nessie and Avis Pennell, j A cornet solo by Miss Dorothy (Hague, an Irish Jig by Master B.
