NEW SQUADRON
DOMINION PILOTS FLYING SPITFIRES ASSISTANCE TO BRITAIN “I am pleased to be able to announce that the first Royal New Zealand Air Force squadron to be formed in the United Kingdom under the Empire Air Training Scheme agreement was established last Saturday, March 1,” said the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, in a broadcast statement last night. “This unit will be a fighter squadron equipped with Spitfires,” Mr Jones continued. “It will be remembered that not long after the war broke out Royal New Zealand Air Foßce units in the United Kingdom sent over to take delivery of the Wellington bombers which were to be flown out to this Dominion were constituted into the New Zealand bomber squadron. It is gratifying to know that the new fighter squadron will also retain a New Zealand identity. “Every day the Empire stronger in the air and it will not be long before squadron alter squadron of the new unit established under the Empire Air Training Scheme will be ranged alongside the formidable strength of the Royal Air Force.”
