CORONER’S COMMENT
LACK OF FACILITIES NO MORGUE AT NGARUAWAHIA to Times) NGARUAWAHIA, Saturday. Scathing comment on the lack of suitable mortuary accommodation in Ngaruawahia was made by the coroner, Mr F. Harris, yesterday, when conducting an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Private William A. G. Peebles, who was drowned in the Waikato River. The inquest was conducted in a small room attached to the Ngaruawahia Rowing Club’s shed and there were no facilities whatsoever for a doctor in case a post mortem examination was necessary. ‘The local authority should do its duty and provide the necessary accommodation.” said Mr Harris. When it was explained that the Ngaruawahia Borough Council had completed plans for a morgue but the Health Department’s specifications made the cost prohibitive, Mr Harris said that the council should go ahead and build a room and call it what they liked. The police stated that in the last few months such a room was required on four or live occasions.
