GERMAN TROOPS

MENACE TO GREECE NEAR THE FRONTIER PEACE OR WAR ? (United Press Assn.—i.lec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, March 3 Small detachments of the German army in Bulgaria have taken up quarters in the towns of Svilengrad and Slatograd, near Daridere, which is south from Plovdiv (Philippopolis); also at Melnik, which is south from Sofia, and at Trigrad. These points are all a few miles from the Greek frontier. Two trainloads of infantrymen are reported to have left Plovdiv for the Turkish frontier early today. A steady stream of army cars traversed Sofia all night. The German headquarters at Chamkuria are 43 miles east of Sofia and 70 miles from the Greek frontier. The Sofia correspondent of the British United Press says it is reported in usually reliable quarters that Germany has given Greece the last chance to make peace or suffer the consequences. It is understood the intimation was conveyed through diplomatic channel:. The Athens correspondent of the Times says Greece is not faltering and is indifferent to threats. It is estimated that there are not more than 450,000 Germans in Bulgaria and Rumania. Bulgaria’s Claims Asked about Germ y’s attitude to Bulgaria’s claims against Greece, the German spokesman Vienna said that a peaceful and cordial solution may be found for the fulfilment of these claims, but it would be superfluous to speculate on the matter just now. On the inauguration of a special broadcast from Greece, expressing the Greek people’s gratitude for the sympathy extended from the first moment of their fight against an enemy numerically greater, but smaller in the conception of right and honour, the Prime Minister of Greece, M. Korizis, expressed confidence in final victory. That, he said, would be the occasion for a holiday throughout the world because it would celebrate the victory of ideals over vile calculations and of right over violence. The United States Minister to Greece, Mr L. MacVeigh, also delivered a speech to Americans in praise of Greece. Copyright) LONDON, March 3 The British Broadcasting Corporation in a broadcast said Britain did not desire to involve Bulgaria in war, but her actions would seem to make her a battlefield, to the great regret of her friends and the suffering of ner citizens. The Sunday Times says that after the Bulgarian intervention of 1915 three 'years elapsed before retribution came. It will not be long delayed this time. Europe cannot permit the peace of the Balkans to be imperilled for ever by the repeated treacheries of a small State entrusted with a strategically important area.
