ADDRESS OF WELCOME TRIBUTE TO LEADERSHIP (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Tuesday The following address to Sir Cyril and Lady Newall was read by the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis at the Civic reception yesterday:— May it please Your Excellency, bn the occasion or your first official vi-lt tu Auckland as Governor-General of .New Zealand, the corporation and citizens desire-to extend to you, and to Lady .Newall, un open-hearted welcome to the city, and to re-affirm to you, as the representative of lli<s Most Gracious Majesty the King, an expression of their continued loyalty to the Throne. In proffering our felicitations and greetings to Your Excellencies, may xve he permitted to express the hope that your term of office in the Dominion will be the happiest, and to assure you of our confident belief that our people xvlll willingly do all their power to make it so. The presence or your family with you is greatly appreciated, and it is our earnest trust that you all will find the climatic conditions beneficial, and the educational and other facilities to your entire satisfaction. Created Fighting Machine It is perhaps hardly necessary for us to indicate that the citizens or Auckland will always be honoured by the residence of Your Excellencies in our citv, and that un such occasions every effort will he made to enhance the pleasure of your stay in our midst. Your Excellency, you come to us as no stranger. We have followed with absorbing interest your service career, which led to your elevation to the highest rank within the gilt of the Royal Air Force. We shall remember -with abiding gratitude your monumental achievements in creating for the Royal Air Force a lighting unit whose daring, initiative anil skill have not onlv captured the admiration or the entire world, but what is more important, have stood as the bulwark between enemy aggression ami the lile and liberties of the British people. f our great leadership in this direction has been an inspiration to every part or the Empire, and we feel we ran assure vou that the people of thH Dominion value beyond measure ihe privilege conferred on them by your appointment as Governor-General or ISexv Zealand. Bonds of Kinship Your Excellency’s experience and attainments in fields of Imperial activity will be of the utina-t help to Nmv Zealand in the pari it is seeking tu play, with other sections of ihe Empire, in ensuring ultimate victory tu our arms and those of our gallant allv. Never previously in the history of New Zealand have t.he bonds or kinship between us and the Mother Country been so strong, although we are confident that your association with our future will result m an even closer knitting or those cherished ties of affection.
