PERRY’S FLAGSHIP

NIAGARA A SHOW PLACE Plans to make the Niagara, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s flagship in the battle of Lake Erie, a national shrine will be well under way when the 127th anniversary of his naval victory in 1812 is observed in Erie, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, and the Work Projects Administration are spending £BOOO to rebuild the Niagara, which is resting in Presque Isle Bay, and to place her in a concrete cradle for the benefit of posterity. When rebuilt and permanently maintained as a national shrine, the Niagara will serve to recall to Americans Commodore Perry’s message, “We have met the enemy and they are ours,” says the Christian Science Monitor.
