USE OF FUNDS
COUNCIL CRITICISED AID FOR RETURNED MEN (By Telegraph.—Pr*»*s A-«nr|ation> THAMES, Friday The expenditure of patriotic funds by the Auckland Provincial Council was discussed at a meeting of the Thames Patriotic Committee last night. The president of the Thames Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr W. R. McNeillie, criticised the expenditure of only £47 for the relief of distress during the year among men discharged from the army when other figures showed that money running into thousands had been spent on the provision of comforts for the men even before they left New Zealand. Mr McNeillie contended that there were cases of distress, and a greater proportion of the money should have been spent on them.
Major T. McCarroll said returned men contended that too much was
being spent otherwise than for those who required the money. Returned men bitterly resented having to go
to the Social Security Department for relief.
It was decided to ask the provincial council to give the matter earnest consideration.
