PRISONER TAKEN
BREAK FROM WAIKERIA SEARCH PARTIES FORMED RECAPTURE THIS MORNING Guards from the Waikeria Borstal Institute and parties of police were engaged yesterday on a search for a prisoner who broke custody from the Institute. The man, Leo Douglas Morpeth, evaded the guards during the afternoon and, running along the access road leading to the Institute, disappeared along the Korokonui Road on the way to Te Awamutu. a Search parties were quickly organised and kept a close watch during the night. Their efforts were rewarded this morning when Morpeth was recaptured a short distance from the Institute. At the August session of the Supreme Court in Auckland Morpeth was sentenced on five charges. On a charge of assault he received a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and on charges of theft and forgery 12 months’ reformative detention.
