SCHOOL LUNCHES
A great deal of food is wasted on day-school playgrounds at lunchtime; children get very tired of the same old sandwich done the same old way day after day, and this waste is neither good for mother who has to buy or the child who leally needs the food. . „ „ Here are a few suggestions for a more appetising meal for the kiddi< Cut the bread thinner, mother! It is better to use a little more butter and know it is eaten than waste it because it’s too thick. If the butter is first creamed and I a little milk added it will spread easier and go farther. The usual tomato sandwich can j be made quite different if a little salad-dressing is first spread on the
buttered bread. Cold mashed vegetables can be made extra tasty with a smear of marmite on the bread. Meats are better chopped finely or minced, and children love sandwiches of cooked bacon, almonds, peanuts-and-walnuts (chopped), combined with salad-dressing.
j Try sandwich rolls. Cut the crust from the top of loaf, turn the loaf on one side and cut slices about a third of an inch thick. Cut off crusts, spread each slice with butter, then put on some grated cheese mixed to a paste with very little saladdressing. Roll tightly, leave for a little while and cut into slices about a quarter-inch thick.
