AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE HAMILTON CLUB SUCCESSFUL OPENING FIXTURE POUNTNEY'S THREE SUCCESSES (By “Nurmi.”) All things considered, the opening meeting of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club was quite ‘successful. The attendance was excellent and although the standard was not high in some ex’ents, all were keenly contested. The most successful competitor on the day xvas S. A. Pountney, who et rried off the open broad jump, the ha’f-mile. and the hurdles. Pountney had prospects of a x’ery successful season, but his athletic activities will be interiupted soon when he goes into camp for three months. E\-en so, he will not require much racing on his return to bring him right again and when open meetings are held his prospects are indeed bright. IVliss Bradley Shines Waikato women’s broad jump champion, Miss Mona Bradley is another with a bright season ahead of her. On Saturday Miss Bradley scored twice—in the broad jump and in the ladies' discus. For her first appearance this season the performances were Quite good. Double to O. Bogun For the last four seasons O. Bogun has made a habit of winning a couple or more events on opening day. On Saturday it xvas the shot and discus —the latter with a very fine effort of 111 ft. 6in. The Auckland champion and record holder, “Ossie.” can throw a good discus any old Lme, in season and out.

Track Stars iii Cams With V. P. Boot in camp at Te Rapa, S. A. Wade at Claudelands, and R. B. Joyes at Papakura, the possibility of an inter-camp athletic meet suggests itself. If such a meeting were to be held no registration numbers would be required and professionals could compete on even terms against the amateurs. “Nurmi” has no idea of the potential strength of these camps, but a triangular relay meeting about the end of November is just a possibility. More Competitors Required Hamilton ranks very highly in New Zealand on the birth rate table and it is thus somewhat puzzling to know where all Hamilton children go on Saturday afternoon. It certainly is not to Hinemoa Park. Last Saturday the club included on its programme four school children’s events, boys under 14 and 16. and girls under 14 and 16. Three lads turned up. “ Nurmi ” will be pleased to receive suggestions of any magnet likely to attract to the park a score or so school children. Once these races get under way they will improve as they go but the difficulty in this town is to get them started. HAMILTON CLUB S EVENTS PROGRAMME FOR TOMORROW The Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club will continue its activities at Hinemoa Park tomorrow, starting at 2 pan. The programme is as follows:—7s yards schoolboys (under 14 and under 10;, 75yds schoolgirls (under 14 and under 16), 75yds open, 75yds junior, 75yds women, 440yds open, 440yds junior, 1 mile open, 90yds women's hurdles, 220yds low hurdles, 440yds walk, women’s high jump, men’s high jump, women’s javelin, men’s javelin, pole vault.
