BALLOT APPEALS FIRST HEARING DATE HAMILTON AREA SITTING With the huge task in the No. 4 (Hamilton) military area of classifying first ballot appeals almost completed it has been possible to arrange the first sitting of the Hamilton District Manpower Advisory Committee. It will consider the first appeals in Hamilton next Wednesday and Thursday, the Winter Show Hall having been chosen as the venue because no accommodation is available at the Courthouse. Appeals from reservists living in Hamilton and the surrounding district will be heard first. Appeals from or on behalf of approximately 1100 men drawn in the ballot will have to be considered by the Hamilton Manpower Committee, and the work is expected to take a considerable time. Several of the appeals lodged were duplicated by an employer or dependants, and it is stated that about 1200 appeals were actually lodged in the Hamilton area. Notices To Men Notices to the men whose appeals will be considered in Hamilton next week are being forwarded from the National Service Department in Hamilton, and will indicate the time and venue of the hearing. It is expected that the collation of appeals from the area will be completed by tomorrow.
Several appeals were received by the National Service Department, Hamilton, regarding men in other military areas. They have been forwarded to the appellants’ home areas. Likewise, some additional appeals are being received in the Hamilton area which have been transferred from other districts. As a result the actual number of appeals is fluctuating daily, but the number is substantially fixed at about 1100 men.
There is little likelihood of the hearings being completed before the appeals from the second ballot begin to arrive. Hearings in the Hamilton area, because of their number, may extend for a longer period than in any district in the Dominion.
MOBILISATION DELAY BALLOT MEN FOR INFANTRY Men from the first ballot to bring the Ist Battalion of the 16th Waikato Regiment up to war strength have had their mobilisation delayed. It was intended that the troops should encamp at the Cambridge racecourse camp early next week, but the encamping date will be delayed probably until after the Labour Day races of the Waikato Hunt Club. The decision has been taken in order to facilitate the handling of the troops while the race meeting is in progress. About 100 men, representing the balance of the volunteers who for various reasons were not able to encamp on October 1 when the unit was mobilised, entered the Cambridge camp this week. The number of men required from the ballot to bring the regiment up to full war strength is about 300.
