TOPICS OF THE DAY
Country of Rumours The Third Reich is a country ol rumours, says a Berlin correspondent of the New York Times. They circulate with amazing rapidity, unquestionably becoming distorted as they go from ear to ear. But they are ever-present. The extent to which they go and the form that they can assume in spite of the absence of press remarks regarding the United States are illustrated by a question asked an American by his cook the other day : “ Is it true that Germany has declared war on the United States ? ” There is profound conviction in Germany—a conviction that is a result not only of the propaganda campaign but the succession of German victories—that this war is going to be won by the Reich and that it is going to be won quickly. The test of the effectiveness of the German manner'of reporting news, however, will come should the Reich suffer a severe setback in the future course of the war without mentioning any conditioning factors.
