NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS RETURN ON SICK LEAVE SYDNEY, Oct. 18 About thirty New Zealand and suty Australian Imperial Forca troops from the Middle East and Australian naval ratings who have been serving in the Mediterranean have arrived in Sydney on sick leave. Most of the men are suffering from tropical illnesses, and a few are recovering from operations. They emphasised that sickness generally among the troops has been negligible and warmly praised the medical services and the camps’ sanitation systems. They said that the food was good and the camps as comfortable as they could be made in a climate where the temperature sometimes soared to 120 degrees in the shade. A New Zealander said there is hardly a man from the Dominion who has not gamed at least a stone. Only two of the Australians in the party had actually been under fire, when they were serving temporarily with a British anti-aircraft unit, which was bombed by Italian pianos. Several of the New Zealanders, however, mentioned bombing raids on the Libyan border. MR ANTHONY EDEN GREAT WELCOME IN EGYPT CAIRO, Oct. 17 Mr Anthony Eden, who was in Egypt 43 hours before his arrival was announced, received a great welcome. Arabic papers featuro the visit, which has resulted in a flood of rumours regarding coming events in the Eastern Mediterranean. Optimism is rapidly spreading, especialy in view of the failure of Germany’s air attacks against Britain.
