ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT
EMPHASIS PLACED UPON PRODUCTION CONFERENCE RECOMMENDATIONS STANDARD OF lIYING :: DANGER OF INFLATION (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Recommendations designed to stabilise the economy of New Zealand were submitted to the Economic Stabilisation Conference today by the committee appointed by the conference at its first sitting some weeks ago. The recommendations, which are intended as advice to the. Government, cover a wide field and follow a general survey of the war-time problems of the Dominion. The conference, representative of all phases of industrial and financial activity in the Dominion, was asked “to survey the general economic position of the country under war conditions in order to consider the possibility of stabilising costs and prices and wages, and to discuss expanding production so that the strain of war expenditure may be successfully borne, and the standard of living be maintained as far as possible. ** Addressing the conference, which reassembled today to consider the working committee’s report, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser said that since the conference first met the tide of war had rolled nearer New Zealand’s shores. No man could say what the future or the near future had in store, and it was more necessary and urgent at the present time to throw all measures that would tend toward cohesion and solidarity into the effort. The committee had heard a great number of witnesses, and it was now ready to report to the full conference. The main object of the conference was to get together in friendly consultation representatives of all sections of the community and gauge production and distribution so that they would arrive at some means of helping the country. The first object was to get the'greatest measure of unity. The conference went into committee to consider the report.
