Grant To Plunket Society At a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night it was i decided to make a grant of £25 to ! the Plunket Society. The decision was in accordance with the practice of other years. Garden Place Sale The sale of a portion of Garden Place to the Waikato Winter Show Association was completed at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council List night, when an order giving effect to the sale was approved. The price for the land was £3802. Recovery From Illness At a meeting of the general committee of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association today, it was decided to send a letter to Mr J. M. Baxter, for many years secretary of the association, wishing him a speedy recovery from his present illness. Parking Offence Charged with parking a car in Victoria Street on September 7 in a prohibited area, Harold Harry Isaacs of Hamilton (Mr R. McCaw) pleaded guilty in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M. A fine of 10s and costs was imposed. Tribute Of Respect As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr H. E. Potter, of Karaka, who was a life member of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, those present at a meeting of the association today stood a moment in silence. Ordered to Home Facing charges of being a rogue and a vagabond and of drunkenness in Victoria Street on October 5, Charles McCarthy, aged 48, of Auckland, appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court to-day. On the first count, McCarthy, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and discharged and on the second he was convicted and ordered to be detained at the Inebriates’ Island for one year.
Clay Bird Shoot One of the features of the Waikato Summer Show last year was the clay-bird shoot. The success of last year’s shoot prompted members at a meeting of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association today to decide to repeat the feature at this year’s show on November 1 and 2, and to donate a special trophy. The secretary, Mr W. L. Ranstead, reported that probably two Dominion champions and one Southern Hemisphere champion would be competing in the shoot.
Lights At Frankton ”1 wish to draw the council’s attention to the fact that there has been no light at the conveniences in Frankton for some time,” said Mr C Lafferty at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. “No, we cannot keep a light there,” said the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro. The electrical engineer, Mr I. Webster, added that lights had been screwed in, locked in and wired in, but if the bulb could not be taken it would be smashed night after night. Recruits For Battery The mobilisation tomorrow from the No. 4 (Hamilton) military area of 92 men drawn in the ballot will bring the B troop and headquarters troop of the 7th Medium Battery, New Zealand Artillery, up to war strength. The unit, which is in training at Claudelands, also includes A troop, composed of Auckland area men. Reinforcements from the ballot to bring the troop up to full strength will be mobilised from the Auckland area next Wednesday. When those men encamp next week the entire battery will be up to war strength. Visit To Fire Brigade
At the invitation of Superintendent A. Craig, Hamilton members of the New Zealand Insurance Institute attended the Hamilton fire station this week and the superintendent gave an interesting and instructive address on several phases of fire prevention. The visitors inspected the modern engine equipment, and after a demonstration by one of the engine crews the superintendent gave a survey of the progress in fire-fighting methods during the last century The speaker answered a number of questions, and appreciation was expressed on behalf of the visitors by Mr W. H. Coltman, president of the Hamilton branch of the institute. Unfit National Reservists Although several members of the 6th (Hamilton) Company of the National Military Reserve have been rejected as unfit during the medical examinations which have been held this week, steps are being taken to make provision for preserving the old associations of the reserve, and rejected men will still attend weekly parades. At the parade last night the officer commanding the unit, Major L. E. Haines, invited those who had not been passed fit to attend the weekly parades. He said he had conferred with the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple, who had indicated that men with previous military service would be valuable as instructors in the Home Guard. It was proposed to form a separate platoon in the company ior men not up to medical standard. Rescued From Drowning
In a report to the Hamilton Borough Council at last night’s meeting concerning the accident to a workman, Mr L, Reid, who fell from the Hamilton traffic bridge into the Waikato River, on September 27, Mr R. Worley, the borough engineer, stated that, but for the prompt action of Mr J. D. Pepper, who at considerable risk to himself, took the life-line out to the victim, Mr Reid would have probably been drowned. The value of the life-line in an accessible position had been practically demonstrated. The council decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr Pepper for his prompt and gallant action. Mr J. R. Fow, who is also a vice-president of the Royal Humane Society, added that it was practically certain that the society would suitably recognise Mr Pepper's action.
